Current Characters: Trip
Character: Mairin
Age: 10 (est.)
Canon: The Strongest Mega Evolution (these specials take place in the main Pokemon anime series' timeline and the stories are starting to overlap now that the specials are finished, so she can be catagorized a Pokemon XY/XYZ anime character even if she has yet to appear in the show, but her ex-travelling companion has ^^;;)
Canon Point: Pre-Act IV
Background: Mairin (Manon in the original) is a young, naive, but exuberant rookie trainer who recently received her Chespin (Harimaron), who she nicknamed Chespie (Hari-san, literally "Mr. Needle" in the original : D;) shortly before her fateful encounter with Alain (Alan), the primary protagonist of the The Strongest Mega Evolution (... and eventual antagonist in the main Pokemon anime series, it seems).
Nothing is known about her history prior to beginning her journey, however it is implied she did not have a formal education (her vocabulary is limited and words like "roots" and "foundation" confuse her, she does not recognize a globe of her own planet and wonders what it is, it's unknown if she can even read, etc.) and she does not recognize doctors or hospital equipment (she tears her comatose partner off of a stretcher and yells at doctors in white labcoats, all while looking for a way to help it...).
In the beginning, she is shown to be very clumsy, she stumbles over rocks, falls into rivers, misteps and trips even on her own feet. Her Pokemon, the long-suffering Chespie, diligently keeps her alive through her many, many misadventures...
After witnessing a great battle deep in the heart of the woods, where she saw strange sights like the normally earth-bound Absol growing wings and a Charizard turning black with blue flames, Mairin couldn't help her fascination. After the battle, the Pokemon's forms changed back to familiar ones and the two, strange jewelry-wearing trainers parted ways.
She (poorly) stalked Alain to the riverbed he was resting beside and he outed her pretty quickly, after which she runs to where he sits in the shadow of a tree, climbing up onto the same rock he is, quickly opening up to him, telling him her name, the name of her partner Pokemon, and excitedly asking about the battle that took place.
She learns from him that what she had witnessed is called a Mega Evolution. When she expresses her desire to Mega Evolve herself (something she'll say rather frequently after this, to Alain's chagrin), he corrects her and says it's the Pokemon that Mega Evolves, not her!
She goes off on a tangent about a young boy who hurled himself from the top of the Lumiose Tower to save his Pokemon (referencing Ash Ketchum from the main storyline) after Professor Sycamore's Garchomp went on a rampage, Alain's expression, which had briefly softened, turns suddenly somber as he goes on to explain that he was Professor Sycamore's apprentice. He describes studying an evolution beyond evolution, the Mega Evolution that takes place only within battle and unlocks a Pokemon's hidden potential and great strength.
But, for reasons kept secret from her, he is no longer in contact with the Professor.
Mairin also witnesses Alain communicating with a male voice on his Holo-Caster from time to time, but he never tells her who that man is. She only knows it's not the Professor he once worked for and who gave her her first Pokemon.
Regardless of his secrecy and initially aloof demeanour, because she spied on him sharing food and treating his Charizard kindly, she boldly tells him he couldn't possibly be a bad person and that he was her ideal type! (Mairin tends to develop crushes easily).
So, in spite of Alain's half-hearted attempts to dissuade her, she decides to accompany him on his journey (she becomes even more enthusiastic when she hears his next opponent will be the attractive Siebold!). He also teaches her how to catch Pokemon and pace herself so she doesn't get carried away and make avoidable mistakes.
When Alain challenges Siebold of the Elite 4, in a very crpytic manner (asking for his "unofficial menu" and flashing his KeyStone), Mairin watches another battle between Mega Evolved Pokemon. Like the first battle, it was kept hidden and far from other people, partially due to the great amount of energy released but also because battling with Mega Evolution seems to be a secret, underground matter.
By Act II, Mairin's open nature and cheer has rubbed off on the previously isolated Alain and he's starting to smile more and the two have grown very close: they leave Kalos (the Pokemon world's equivalent of France, their home region) for Houen (based on Hokkaido) on a plane together and he injures himself saving her from danger. Still, in spite of how close they've gotten, Alain never tells her about the nature of his work, who he answers to, why he's no longer with Professor Sycamore, or why his goal changed from studying Mega Evolution to battling every other trainer and obtaining the strongest Mega Evolution.
In between the two Acts, we're also shown that Mairin is becoming progressively less clumsy (and apparently learns to skateboard!), while Alain becomes more fond of her.
However, she's still prone to occasional clumsiness, such as when she manages to trip, skid down a hill, and get stuck in the same bare branches. Twice. In a row. ("ALAAAAIN, MY BUTT'S STUCK, I CAN'T MOVE MY BUTT!!" right within earshot of the region champion, brilliant first impression). Each time with Alain pulling her out, only lightheartedly teasing her.
By chance, after Alain battles another trainer bearing a KeyStone (who turns out to be the region Champion, Steven Stone!), they meet a tall, formidable man named Lysandre. Mairin is immediately suspicious, because the man's voice sounds familiar... Alain goes very quiet and withdrawn, causing Mairin to try and draw him out, but he doesn't tell her anything, except that Lysandre is his "most important person." When she asks "Even more than Professor Sycamore?" He says yes.
She learns is that Alain is the subordinate of this man and that he is the director of a company by the way they address each other... and then, she places that his voice is the same one she hears on Alain's Holo-Caster.
Lysandre seems to suspect their relationship and hovers over Mairin, flustering and confusing her when he loudly calls her Alain's "unusually small girlfriend."
After piecing together some broken tablets at some ruins and ascending a staircase of light, they arrive at a massive stone which may be the basis of Mega Evolution, but before they can do anything with it, an enraged Legendary Pokemon called Rayquaza descends in Mega Evolved form and sends down fiery meteors, seeking to destroy the stone. While trying to protect Chespie, she nearly gets hit by blast, when Alain dives in and shields her with his body, injuring his shoulder in the process.
She shows concern for him, but he tries to play it off.
Later, after Lysandre calls Alain away (he orders him to spy on the region champion, but Mairin doesn't hear this either), the second Act ends mirroring the end of the first, except instead of Alain walking off with a small smile as Mairin chases after him, it ends with Alain chasing after Mairin.
By the third Act, Mairin's growing concerns about the dangers of Alain's missions for his mysterious "director" come to a head when he must travel to where Groudn, Kyogre, and Mega Rayquaza clash violently. Although she begs him not to go because she has a feeling he'd face even greater danger, why does it matter so much to him that he become the strongest, is it really worth the danger?! But, he harshly rebuffs her. She sneaks into the Champion Steven Stone's airship to accompany them and breaks free, together with Chespie, to rescue her friend when he and his Pokemon are struck down and collapse, unconscious, on the ice. Dragging his heavy body to safety, protecting him as he protected her, Mairin is horrified when she sees how violent their clash is and how close to death Alain came.
He comforts her after it, as Mairin expresses her fears were all for his sake, and they gently embrace... only for him to abandon her in the region "for her own protection" leaving on a plane for more dangerous missions while she's sleeping.
Of course, that doesn't deter Mairin from being determined to save Alain from himself!
Personality: Mairin is bright, cheerful, almost relentlessly positive, and full of laughter and light. She's also blunt, precocious, opinionated, loud, and kind of rude. She's very energetic and animated, making wide gestures and bouncing around all over the place while talking. She can find humour even in bad situations and her own misfortunes and accidents, as long as there's no chance of someone she loves getting badly hurt.
She's not the most learned or experienced, but she's always eager to learn and never ashamed of how little she knows... or of anything, really! She can be very blunt, to the point of being rather shameless, loudly shouting about her butt in front of a perfect stranger (the Champion of the region they travelled to, no less!). She's also casually blunt about her crushes, declaring to Alain that he's her ideal type right off the bat!
She never beats around the bush, she just says exactly what's on her mind! She's very loud and opinionated, eager to be taken seriously for her capabilities and opinions, hating to be treated like a child that needs to be looked after.
She's very eager to learn Mega Evolution, although even after all this time, she still declares that she'll be the one Mega Evolving, even after multiple corrections by Alain...
She's very supportive of those she cares about, introducing her partner Pokemon, Chespie, as the most capable Pokemon in the region!
But she also cares deeply about her friends and the idea of losing those dear to her terrifies her more than anything. She will go the ends of the earth to keep them safe if possible, or at least be there for them in the end, even if they tell her not to, and so, she just can't understand Alain's recklessness for his goal. What would being the strongest matter if he could get hurt or even die in the process? What could possibly be worth that? (She doesn't know that he thinks it's all to protect those he finds dear, ironically enough.)
The incident where she ran onto the ice to save Alain, who had passed out (and it might not have been clear to Mairin if he was going to wake up or not) and looking up and seeing two Legendary Pokemon engaged in fierce fighting terrified her and it seems to have caused a lasting fear of losing Alain to his mad pursuit of becoming the strongest.
She loves her friends dearly and gains strength from them, believing that being with Alain will make her and Chespie stronger too.
Because her friends mean so much to her, being shut out and rejected by them hurts her badly, as does being powerless to help them. Her seemingly endless cheer breaks when Alain claims (in a later point from where I'm taking her) that he can't get stronger if she stays by his side and she runs away to cry alone, even requesting, quietly and uncharacteristically, to be left alone when Chespie tries to comfort her.
Despite her bluntly honest and open nature, when she's sad, she holds it all in, trying to keep up the facade, refusing to face even her partner, breaking down in tears only after Chespie honoured her request to be left alone. She does everything with her partner and Chespie is practically never in its pokeball, always by her side, so this idea of only crying alone seems to be very deeply ingrained into her; she'll share happiness, but she won't burden anyone else with her sadness.
When she reaches breaking point, however, she won't even be able to manage that much and will cry openly and seek comfort from anyone who will offer it to her... even shady, untrustworthy types like Lysandre (who Alain has tried to keep her away from and who embarrassed her when they first met by calling her Alain's "unusually small girlfriend").
Being a child, despite her crushes on grown-ups and insistence on not being treated as a child (excuse you, she's a maiden), Mairin's very naive and trusting, even if she has suspicions of her own, she's much more likely to give others the benefit of a doubt and always likes to search for the good in others. Her lack of knowledge (beyond the normal even for a child her age) also leaves her at a disadvantage.
Overall, she is kind and supportive, honest and cheerful, determined and optimistic, naive but eager to learn, and tries her absolute best to keep her friends safe and to hold herself together.
Abilities: She can skateboard! :D ... she's just an ordinary kid, but with two neat Pocket Monsters!
Her Chespin (Chespie) is her partner Pokemon and her very first, always by her side and her soul partner. Japanese name implies it's probably male, but nothing's confirmed.
Chespie is helpful, very reliable and kind. It's always concerned about its trainer, even now that she no longer needs to be saved from her own clumsy trips and falls (... that often), it also shows concern for her when she's sad, but it's respectful enough to leave her alone when she asks it to later on (although this is very unusual for them, so it leaves Chespie very upset and confused). It matches Mairin in sheer drive to protect, as it will in the future rush to save a captured and tortured Pokemon it has never even met before, only to slip into a coma because of it... but for now, Mairin and Chespie are happy
Chespie's spikes (arranged around its head) are soft when relaxed, but sharpen and become very sharp and stiff when battling and also launch a number of attacks. It is known to use the following moves:
Vine Whip, Pin Missile, and Toxic.
Vine Whip is also used outside of battle to climb and scale things, catch and its trainer when she falls off of things, pull things closer, as arms with further reach...
Pin Missile shoots streaming, green poisonous pins from its spikes!
Toxic shoots a purple-coloured, liquid poison from Chespin's spikes that disperse into a cloud that will poison anyone who inhales it.
Bébé (Fla-chan) is her Flabebe and the first Pokemon Mairin caught. Japanese name implies it's female, but nothing's confirmed. It's only known move is Magical Leaf! Flabebe spins and sends a bunch of glowing, green leaves that will chase the opponent until they hit!
Alignment: Daimonia; although Mairin normally only shows her upbeat and positive side, she feels both happiness and sorrow intensely.
Other: Mairin's from Kalos (Pokemon's equivalent of France), so she lapses into French a bit... not excessively, even homeless kids living off the streets in her world are bilingual at least, but she has a habit of saying "non, non!" in French frequently (and it's a bit of a pun, since her Japanese version name is Manon) and she uses honorifics, so I'd like to write those in French. Will that be okay?
Sample: Test Drive! This thread specifically for butt jokes and Mairin being her boisterous, optimistic self, tiny bit of emotional-affects here, but the threads are incomplete/didn't go on very long, so I didn't really express much there other than: Mairin worries, makes leaves fall, panics up a whirlwind and scatters even more leaves. ^^; To be honest, I was pretty forgetful of that writing those, or she would've been sparkling more or glowing or something to do with light when she's happy, because that's pretty much how the specials characterize her because of her bright and cheerful nature (light's symbolic for her as shadow is for Alain).
In terms of personality and voice, they're pretty solid threads, though!
I could come up with a new sample if needed for showing how her emotions would affect the world, though.
Questions: Can she bring her skateboard? Serious question!
